I’m not a rapper, and I haven’t been in the rap scene long enough to help anyone navigate it with confidence. I’m more of a pop, indie, RnB with a sprinkle of anime soundtracks girlie, but I appreciate a catchy tune no matter the genre, and if it comes with complimentary tea, imma be all over it.
Like the Drake and Kendrick Lamar tussle for the past few weeks. I’m not sure how it even started where these two giants in the game were at each other’s throats, but most of my timeline on Twitter (X) kept mentioning it, and I am not the one to be left out.
Here’s more background information because it’s not just about these two men; it seems like recently everybody taking shots at Drake: The Man No One Loved. And let’s not forget Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss,” where she first references Drake’s BBL.
So I poked around a bit and listened to Kendrick’s “meet the grahams” and my jaw dropped.
Yeah, I entered into this like Troy coming back in with pizzas on Community, but when a man addresses your family members--one by one--on a track released within an hour after your own response, it’s over for you.
The mole allegation got to be true cause there ain’t no way.
I didn’t need to hear anything else. I didn’t need to catch up on the other songs. Those six minutes were enough for me. But apparently, Kendrick had other plans because he released “Not Like Us” the next day.
The next day?!
The next day, and Black Twitter (X) basically went like this:
With that drop from Kendrick last Saturday, it was a knockout heard around the world. And it still reverberates til this day, which has been my favorite part of this whole fiasco.
Drake v. Kendrick is a nuanced phenomenon; there are layers to this with the accusations that they throw at one another and the way women and children are used as fodder between the two, but the creativity and community formed during this cultural moment is not something to ignore.
As seen with other cultural moments, people’s imaginations ran wild, and they took the original content to create something funny, witty, and poignant.
And most importantly, something that they could call their own that they then wanted to share with other people as you can see with the following entries.
This then became background music to some videos and spawned great remixes from around the world:
Other things that made me giggle:
The internet can be a dumpster fire with trolls patrolling the space ready to ticket you with a “gotcha,” but then times like this, I’m amused to see what other people can come up with, and I’ll be sad to see it go if it becomes too inhabitable for community.
In the comments, share some of your favorite posts from this lyrical duel. Would love to keep the party going with you.
OMG that is the FIRST time I ever saw the origins of that meme 🤣🤣🤣 The disrespect to poor T-Steak I mean T-Bone... smh
I haven't followed the Kendrick v. Drake beef; all I know is Kendrick did a song with Beyonce and Drake "dates" underaged girls, so I know whose side I'm on, easy-peasy. But it's super cool when social media brings people together instead of tearing the world apart, the way it usually does.
